I'm receiving an exception "System.Runtime.InteropServices.SEHException: External component has thrown an exception. " (Error code 255) when a given job is executed. The job had been initially successful on runs, then appears to happen randomly and any further execution of the job fails for similar reasons. Restarting the VC service corrects the issue, but we can't determine its cause.

Looking in the VC logs, we find the following "Err Task "******" exited with code: 255(The extended attributes are inconsistent.)"

Has this been seen by others?

Windows 2012 - VC 7.7.8

I would try upgrading and changing Credential settings to "CreateProcessAsUserW" option (need to enable Extended debugging in server settings to see this option).
