Is it possible to check the "date modified" on a file before an FTP download, from within VC (without calling a script.)

What is desired is to ensure that there is a current file, before downloading it, when the file name is the same each day, and the only distinguishing characteristic to be sure that we have the current file is to check for a modified date within a certain range. It is also important to be able to use a notification if a current file is not available.

(If it's not currently possible to do within VC, please let me know if this would be feasible to repost as a requested feature.)
