Worse, the file that was supposed to be renamed is now deleted. If the task fails, surely it should not delete the file?

The only bug here is the deletion of the file. The other is correct, renaming a file is actually to Move a file, that is what is happening in the background (even if the terminology rename has a different meaning)

And the error you get don't happen if you use the star in post processing mask, only when you've set up the task in a wrong way (only having the star there above post processing)
