Hello,

I've seen a couple of people post this problem but didn't see an answer. Just the last couple of weeks VisualCron has been giving this error when pulling files from external FTP sites with a file size greater than 8MB.

See the spoiler for VC's debugging messages:

I've tried this with several different files and different FTP sites (sFTP, FTP-21, FTPS,...) but the result is the same. BTW, running version 5.6.

Thanks!

Perhaps a timeout problem. Have you tried to alter the timeout value in the Connection?

Nope. I've tried with 30 seconds on the timeout and up to 260 seconds and still gives the same error. I forgot to add I'm able to get the files with an FTP client like CoreFTP and FileZilla without any problems.

It downloads pretty much the whole file except errors at the end. It is like it can't closeout the file and the transfer. The ZIP/the file are corrupt after the error. I've also tried rebooting the box incase that was creating problems.

Original Size on disk: 11.5 MB (12,066,816 bytes)
After file is downloaded and errors: 11.4 MB (12,001,280 bytes)

It would be great if you could share your connections settings (account info) and Task settings with support@visualcron.com and then we can test if there is a specific problem against your FTP server or settings.

I'll see what I can do. Unfortunately on thise external FTP sites and they have information I can't disclose so I'll need to find a way to give you access to a site you can do pure testing with.

Even better, do you have a FTP site I can upload a file to and pull back down for testing purposes? If that errors like our sites, then I can give you all the information you need. Let me know and feel free to PM the information if that's an option.

Thanks

We don't have any external FTP test site but I recommend you set up one with the free FileZilla server.

Quick update. I can't setup an FTP site locally since they would be in our network and the scenerio wouldn't be the same. Later today I'm hoping to setup an external site and test it to make sure the error still happens. If so, I'll send you all the information.

Also, we upgraded to 5.6.2 and the error still exists. We found another problem with pulling files from an external FTP and dropping them on a share with a UNC path. This is only on the 5.6.2 build and not the 5.6. I'll submit this as a seperate problem.

Thanks

We are replying here as well. The UNC problem is fixed here:

We will get back to you regarding the other test.

Thank you.

We just tested. Both the Task and the FTP Browser. Both times the file was fully downloaded with size:

12 063 885 bytes

Download was quite fast. About 1.7 mB/s.

Perhaps you can look at the server log and compare my download against your download. It is really hard to say why.

Try setting up VisualCron on another location - just for testing.

By chance can you slow the download down to say 30k? My theory is the download times out and still technically downloading the file but can’t close the file because the connection doesn’t exist anymore.

Update: It is possible it is our firewall or something causing it to terminate the connection but allow the download to keep happening. I'm going to also do something further testing and also try it outside the network.

I tested it on an outside network and it did seem to work okay. I'm going to try a few other tests and see if I can figure it out. Who knows... could be something with the firewall.

I figured it out!

Apparently, Windows Firewall doesn't like VC inside our network. Strange thing is I can get it to work outside the network with Windows Firewall on but not when VC is internal.

Remember Windows Firewall = Sucks
