I have a job with a task that runs a powershell script that has to interact with the desktop (run an application, send keypresses). This worked on Server 2003 but no longer works on Server 2012. I have:
- upgraded to the latest version of VC
- Enabled the security policy setting to not require Ctrl+Alt+Del
- tried every permutation I could think of for credentials options and execution context
Nothing seems to work. Please help! I have gotten it to work when I run task manually, but I need it to run without anyone being logged in to the server.

Please test this version: http://www.visualcron.co....aspx?g=posts&t=4907

Then attach the file server_startup.txt from the log directory. This should give us more hints why.

Also, turn on Extended debugging in Server settings->Log. Run the Task and attach the log log_serverDATE.txt here.

I have substituted the account name that the task runs under with XXaccount@localmachineXX and my user ID with XXMyAccountNameXX for security reasons server_startup.txt (13kb) downloaded 53 time(s).

Is this a vanilla W2012 or have you enabled any special policies? Which version of 2012?

Windows Server 2012 R2.
There may be policies in play that I am not directly aware of.

Something else came to light though - there was an issue with the server's computer object in the domain. Not sure if/why that would affect a local account but let me do some more testing today now that has been resolved and let you know if I still have an issue.

I mean, if you knew the differences we could apply one security change at a time to test what causes the problem.

I don't really have the authority to remove or apply security patches to this server unfortunately.

I thought you were referring to group policy settings being pushed down

Yes, it could be group policy settings. But first we just wanted to know if it works before applying your group policy settings.

The test should be something like this:

1. install VisualCron
2. apply the CTRL+ALT+DELETE policy
3. reboot
4. confirm that it works with foreground execution
5. apply group policy settings
6. does it work now?

The ability to apply or not apply GPO is not within my ability. It is controlled centrally outside of my team. All I can realistically do is run a report so show what GPOs are in effect.

Sorry for the late response. Unfortunately we have not found a way to determine which setting is causing the problem for you. Maybe some IT guy at your place can compare the vanilla install of Windows 2012 (that works) with your security settings to determine this?

Its not a vanilla install of 2012 that works, its Server 2003.

I mean, if you install Windows 2012 with default settings it will work. But you seem to apply specific security on your install. That is the difference.
