Hello,

I'm having some trouble connecting to and SFTP using public key authentication and I was hoping someone could help.

I have the connection built out in VisualCron with the private key and password, however when I try to establish a connection, I get the following error: "Private key could not be loaded, error: 3331".

Using winscp I am able to establish an SFTP connection using the same private key file and password. Is there something else I need to check in the connection configuration to get this to work?

Thank you,

For reference, I have a connection that we use to conenct to one of our vendors to send files and all we're using is the Username and "Private Key File"

Authentication Type: Public Key

CREDENTIAL:
UserName: Us3rN@me (changed to protect the innocent)
Password: Blank

PUBLIC KEY:
Private Key File: D:\Jobs\CustomerName\JobName\PrivateKey.ppk
Password: Blank

Does your Private Key file require a password? I've never tried that before.

Running Version 6.0.6 currently.

Hi Brian,

Our vendor does require a password with the private key. However, I've tried with the password field blank as well just for testing and I get the same 3331 error rather than an authentication error. Any ideas?

VC: 6.0.8

CREDENTIAL:
UserName: Us3rN@me (changed to protect the innocent)
Password: p@SSw0rd

PUBLIC KEY:
Private Key File: D:\Jobs\CustomerName\JobName\PrivateKey.ppk
Password: p@SSw0rd

Thanks!

Wait, You're entering a password for the credential AND for the Public Key? Is that just in case the Public Key doesn't work? I wouldn't think you'd need a password under 'CREDENTIAL' if you're using a public key file, just the password for the public key itself.

Again, I haven't tried this and don't have a way to test using a PPK/password combo, just thinking out loud.

I've tried it with leaving the password under credentials blank and I also tried with a password under credentials. I get the same result both ways

Private key could not be loaded, error: 3331
Server key received, fingerprint is ....
SFTP error 114
Connection lost (error code is 10058)

114 is an authentication error, but this is likely resulting from 3331 with the key not loading.

Are there any ideas as to why the key is not loading?

Thank you

Yes, this happens if you load the public key instead of the private key.

Thanks Henrik. I believe when the connection was first set up it may have been pointing to the public key rather than the private key. I did verify the connection is using the private key and still throws the same error.

I tried deleting the connection and recreating and that did the trick! Its working now.

Thanks for all the help!
